A deadly triple threat is sweeping across Africa, including South Sudan: COVID-19, a “hunger pandemic” and now plagues of locusts that are devouring crops.
In the Jonglei region of South Sudan, 1.4 million people were already severely hungry, with more than 300,000 children under 5 acutely malnourished.
The World Food Programme says the pandemic will leave more than a quarter-billion people acutely hungry by year-end. The lives of 265 million people in low and middle-income countries will be under “severe threat” — as opposed to the previous figure of 135 million pre-COVID.
